The checklist outlines a series of decisions that should be made in developing your school’s plan for social-emotional and behavioral universal screening. Below each of these decisions are some of the potential options your school might consider.
Identify how often your school would like to screen students for behavior difficulties.
- Three times a year (fall, winter, spring)
- Twice a year (fall and spring)
- Once a year (fall)
Identify who will screen the students
*Middle and high schools: Identify which teacher will complete the ratings
- Students will rate their own behavior (3rd grade and above)
- Teachers* will rate their students’ behaviors
- Parents will rate their child’s behaviors
- Some combination of the above

If teachers are screening their students, when and where will they complete the ratings?
- During a faculty meeting
- During their plan time
- On their own time
If parents are screening their students, when and where will they complete the ratings?
- During parent/teacher conferences
- At home on their own time
If students are screening themselves, when and where will they complete the ratings?
- During homeroom
- During a specific period (e.g., English/Language Arts)
- During another pre-specified time
What constructs are of interest to the school?
- Internalizing Problems

Which universal screening tool should be used?
- Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (SAEBRS)
- Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS)
- Student Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)
- Student Risk Screening Scale – Internalizing and Externalizing (SRSS-IE)
- Social Skills Improvement System – Performance Screening Guide (SSiS-PSG)
